ETAS to represent Bosch as a strategic member of the Eclipse working group for software-defined vehicles

Collaboration on the basis of an open-source working group for software-defined vehicles

Stuttgart/Germany, May 5, 2022 – ETAS, supplier of basic vehicle software, middleware, and development tools for the realization of software-defined vehicles, will represent Bosch as a strategic member of the working group for software-defined vehicles, as launched by the Eclipse Foundation.

The working group has been established on the initiative of ETAS GmbH and its parent company, Robert Bosch GmbH. As of this year, Bosch has bundled its activities in the development of cross-domain software for vehicles and the cloud under the umbrella of ETAS.

The Eclipse Foundation, one of the world’s largest open-source communities, recently announced the formation of the “Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) Working Group”. Using a “code first” approach, the goal is to build one of the automotive industry’s first ever software stacks, along with associated development tools, for the core functions of a software-defined vehicle. These solutions will be made available to any company that wishes to use them for their own vehicle development. The working group is open to any further members who wish to contribute to this goal.

“The creation of this working group reflects our strong belief that the development of software-defined vehicles should be based on cross-company collaboration and a vibrant open-source community,” says Christoph Hartung, Chairman of the Board of Management of ETAS GmbH. “We look forward to sharing our many years of experience in series production and our expertise in the development of automotive platform software while also profiting from the knowledge and expertise of fellow members of the community.”

“The focus on the development expertise of the open-source initiatives is the key factor for success,” says Ansgar Lindwedel, Director Software-Defined Vehicle Ecosystem Development and ETAS member of the steering committee for the working group. “Together with our partners, we’re already achieving great things in a host of ongoing Eclipse open-source IoT projects, including ‘Iceoryx’, ‘Kanto’, and ‘Kuksa’. We now want to leverage this success for new projects in the working group for software-defined vehicles.”
