Overview

Applications of ETAS Solutions

The demands on our automobiles’ drivability, convenience, safety, and environmental compatibility are steadily increasing. As a result, the number and complexity of electronic vehicle functions in modern automobiles and trucks is continuously rising.

Some examples: Today’s midsize cars being equipped with engine and transmission controls, electronic brakes, occupant safety, as well as driver assistant and infotainment systems, feature some 40 electronic control units (ECUs). Modern engine control modules process up to 250 MIPS (million instructions per second); these may contain upwards of 20,000 function parameters. The same magnitude applies to the volume of code onboard the ECU, the logical core of all control and diagnostic functions.

And there is even more.Today‘s automotive electronic control systems are interconnected: For example the engine management is linked to the electronic brake and adaptive cruise control. It makes use of position data provided by the navigation system. Hybrid propulsion has to manage engine, brakes, battery, and starter/generator within an integrated, overarching control approach. To do so new vehicle bus systems such as LIN, FlexRay, and Automotive Ethernet have been or are going to be introduced. They provide flexible connectivity solutions for low cost as well as high performance requirements. On top, megatrends such as automated driving will inevitably lead to even more and sophisticated functionalities with significant impact on electronic automotive systems.

These challenging requirements within the development of automotive systems make cost efficient solutions necessary to implement intelligent functionality, both within and beyond the domains of powertrain, chassis, and body, accomplished with the aid of electrics, electronics, and software. ETAS provides a wide variety of tools and software components for the following applications, addressing specific requirements of the automotive industries:
